Picture the Following Scene

A woman stands by the side of the road, her arm outstretched, hoping that a passing motorist will stop and give her a lift. Standing a few feet away are the other members of her party: both young, male. One holds a load sub-machine gun.
Do you pick them up?

In America: Are you nuts?
In Israel: Hi, where are you headed.

A Normal, Everyday Occurance

Today, I needed to travel into a major city for a conference. Rena came along. When I got there, the conference manager asked me whether we had eaten lunch yet. We had not. So he (graciously) gave us vouchers and told us to go downstairs to the hotel restaurant, which we did.
We went downstairs and found ourselves plates and took food. Really good, tasty food. Fish, salads, desert - all at a wonderful buffet.
Sitting at a table, eating my lunch I realized that if I had been in America, where would I have been able to have precisely the same experience: eating on real plates, in the main cafeteria of a major hotel at a normal conference?
Answer: nowhere else in the world.
Except in Israel.

Ulpan Spolter

Introducing a new feature teaching you Hebrew words and phrases that I find interesting:
לסמס - lesames - to send a text message, (or SMS)
Explanation: Listening to the radio this morning, and the host was talking about a fund to raise awareness about a certain muscular illness. She said that to donate you can lesames - send an SMS message - to a certain phone number to donate money.
Usage: אני אסמס אותך - ani asames otechah - "I will text message you."
