Rosie the Riveter

I am not a morning person. Okay - that's the understatement of the century. Every morning, as soon as I open my eyes, I am presented with what seems like an insurmountable challenge: waking up. But, last night I got a phone call. It was a mother in the school my children attend, looking for volunteers. The soldiers who are supposed to be in school every day to help get the children into the shelters in case of a siren, would be delayed, since they would be coming from home. Many non-essential soldiers are permitted to go home for Shabbat. They were not expected to come until 8am. School doesn't start until 8:10, but the buses start coming at 7:30. So, they were looking for voluteers to be in school starting at 7:25 until the soldiers arrive. I said yes. You know what? I was able to get out of bed relatively quickly (I only snoozed once). I got everyone dressed and ready for breakfast (except Bezalel, who's home sick today), and ran out the door at 7:20. Thank God, it was boring. The soldiers (Leah will be happy to see they are "lady armies") got there at 7:45, and there were no sirens. So, like the women in the US during World War II who rallied behind the image of Rosie the Riveter and got jobs to help the war effort, today I did my part.
